The education tour has been a tremendous success so far, especially now that Anna Holden has arrived from California. She set up most of our appointments, has a background in environmental studies, and works in marine conservation. Her and I have partnered up and are doing presentations at a middle school and elementary school in Bismarck. What's probably more interesting is that I heard from the athletes last night!
Sam rejoined the team after being out for about 5 days....the doctor says he won't be healed completely for weeks, but Sam belongs in the action, he's determined to finish this race. Jason and Paul are very happy to have him back, they keep comparing themselves to the Star Trek team after their leader has been beamed up to the mother ship...I don't get it either. Since we have had a few 40 degree days here in the Western part of the state, all of the snow has melted! The athletes are so driven and committed to cross the state using wind that they have borrowed primatively rigged "buggies" to finish the race. A buggy looks like a small, three wheel go-kart with no engine and a pedal breaking system. They have had to abandon their packs and tie everything on to the small buggies, which frees up their hands to control the kite. Paul will be sporting a Mountain board and carrying a pack, mountain boards look like skate boards with large wheels. They have never done anything like this before, but they are rallying and we think they'll finish! Way to roll with the punches guys!
I want to make a special point of thanking our camera crew. Ellis, our videographer, has really stepped up and dealt with less than ideal conditions. He has been out there filming the struggles, camping out himself, and providing some support for the athletes as they change gears due to the lack of snow. He's been the most versatile member of our crew, he's a lifesaver.
I'll update again as soon as I hear from the guys tonight.
